Uses of the Erotic: The Erotic as Power by Audre Lorde
There are many kinds of power, used and unused, acknowledged or otherwise. The erotic is a resource within each of us that lies in a deeply female and spiritual plane, firmly rooted in the power of our unexpressed or unrecognized feeling. In order to perpetuate itself, every oppression must corrupt or distort those various sources of power within the culture of the oppressed that can provide energy for change. For women, this has meant a suppression of the erotic as a considered source of power and information within our lives.

We have been taught to suspect this resource, vilified, abused, and devalued within western society. On the one hand, the superficially erotic has been encouraged as a sign of female inferiority; on the other hand, women have been made to suffer and to feel both contemptible and suspect by virtue of its existence.

It is a short step from there to the false belief that only by the suppression of the erotic within our lives and consciousness can women be truly strong. But that strength is illusory, for it is fashioned within the context of male models of power.

...

The very word erotic comes from the Greek word eros, the personification of love in all its aspects - born of Chaos, and personifying creative power and harmony. When I speak of the erotic, then, I speak of it as an assertion of the lifeforce of women; of that creative energy empowered, the knowledge and use of which we are now reclaiming in our language, our history, our dancing, our loving, our work, our lives.

...

The erotic cannot be felt secondhand. As a Black lesbian feminist, I have a particular feeling, knowledge, and understanding for those sisters with whom I have danced hard, played, or even fought. This deep participation has often been the forerunner for joint concerted actions not possible before.

But this erotic charge is not easily shared by women who continue to operate under an exclusively european-american male tradition....

The whole thing. )

let us gather in the bar, let us eat and drink and talk, let us listen to whatever the bartender, then the dj, choose to play for us. let us get up and shuffle seats, let us hug one another hello and goodbye. let us butt tuesday.

i'll be there from six to eight, possibly a little earlier, possibly a little later, and if you have my mobular number you can check for updates. i probably won't twitter "staying until 9 at the noc!" or anything like that. (though i do twitter BT announcements each week, they just don't show up here anymore.)

special guest this week: the hoptoad's cousin, a nice 23-year-old fellow who spent three weeks riding the bicycle he built from missoula, montana to san francisco, in order to come work on a ship which is part of the festival of sail, taking place this week.

"As soon as you get into Vista applications in notebook and desktop, you start running into very demanding applications because Vista is not optimized for flash memory solid state disk," he said.

Why is any special optimization (presumably to evenly distribute cell usage) not done in the disk firmware itself?
Call me crazy, but a storage technology specifically designed to make random reads faster sould, y'know, handle any access pattern!

I really wish our culture would shift from blaming others to taking personal responsibility to do the right thing.

In the 00s, there is haskell, which will be the same." -_m.

i'm doing LOCAL ONLY preorders again for our new shirts. here's a mockup:

...and here's a closeup of the design:

the back says:

YOU'RE NOT WORTH ENOUGH TO BE SACRED
EVERYTHING
GOES COLD

ALL YOU'RE WORTH IS MY TRANSPORTATION

...in white/light blue. i'll make a mockup of the back if you really need it.

thanks to [info]stitchmind for the new design once again!

$15 for men's, $17 for women's. they're more expensive than the fail shirts because they cost me a -lot- more.

also: there are no size large women's this time, they didn't sell last time. speaking of which, if you want a women's large FAIL shirt, lemme know :D there are also no XXLs because of the minimums again, and everybody who asks for XXLs seems to be okay with an XL instead.

and as usual, YOU MUST ACTUALLY PICK UP YOUR SHIRT. i am not shipping these.

I need recommendations on comfortable laptop backpacks.
The one I am using is a cheap freebie that I started using when messenger bags started messing with Harold* too much. I'm ready to commit to a better backpack... and, yes, I'm also working on reducing Harold, but I try to not aggravate him overmuch.

Must be able to fit 15.5" laptop, and not have those annoying plastic-clip shoulder straps to attach them to the body of the bag. They need to be sewn.

*Yes, I named my shoulder knot. If you'd had knotty scar tissue for 17 years, you'd have named it, too.

Subject:Doctors and wait time
Time:2:35 pm.
Discussing this a bit on Irc, thought I'd throw it at a more semi-permanent place, and a potentially wider distribution group.

How long are you willing to wait at the doctor's office?

How long are they willing to wait for you?

Most places seem unwilling to wait more than 10 minutes if you're late.

I'm unwilling to wait more than 15 minutes per room.

This typically means that if I'm on time, and I wait 15 minutes in the waiting room, and 15 minutes in the exam room, I'm gone. If I have an appointment, I expect to be seen on time.

If it's an ER visit, I bring a couple books.

How about you?

Subject:TED talk on education and creativity
Time:12:32 pm.
He very much says what my MA in integrated Arts program folks said, but good to hear on TED. A little much on the sidetracking in the beginning, but I love his closing story. So true.

TED talk on how education kills creativity, and how to rethink it.

Some of the themes that kept coming up in my courses:

-the educational system was created for the industrial age, for people to fill roles within a system.

-the world is now changing too fast for people to anticipate what those roles will be when the kids grow up, so we have to prioritize teaching them how to think, not just regurgitate.

-more, we have to get them to think creatively, to problem solve for problems and need we cannot yet anticipate.

Not directly addressed in the TED talk, but brushed against:

-the arts aren't just an end-goal of "are you likely to be an artist"? They help people think creatively, to take risks, experiment, communicate and express- all useful skills for many many fields.

-also if you look at the studies (Champions of Change hs a huge ten-year meta-study worth checking out) a lot of the problems in education get smaller with more art- direct correlations between number of hours spent in art and raised SAT test scores (around 15% I believe), direct reverse correlation with drop out rates, detention and discipline problems. and no... this is not about privileged kids doing better and being the ones who get more art time- the positive difference is more extreme in disadvantaged kids who suddenly get access to art.

Subject:Pop Roxx Black
Time:10:53 am.
Everybody loves a funeral.

Normally, I would attribute this turn of phrase to JWZ, but the honor goes to Da5id Din, who made this same observation many years ago, when Assimilate had its sixth or seventh very last night ever. People always show up for births and deaths, he said. Everybody loves a funeral.

Let us not mourn the death of Pop Roxx, but celebrate its life. Let us celebrate Barry in his array of multicolored zoot suits. Let us celebrate the DJ's, who mostly played music I did not find to be offensive. Let us celebrate the Bootie lounge, which was often so crowded that it was impossible to get from one end to the other. Let us celebrate Eric, drunk and puking and possibly passed out on my couch. Let us celebrate the go-gos, dressed like a tragic paper shredder accident at the Leg Avenue factory. Let us celebrate the bands: Lurid Bliss and the Epoxies and those other guys whose names I cannot recall. Let us dance on boxes and wonder where our drinks went and stand irritated behind drunk people kissing.

I was not always good to you, Pop Roxx, especially not in the last year, when everything went slow and no one was really steering the ship. I cheated on you with other clubs. I cheated on you with house parties. I stayed home and fell asleep on the couch. But you had your moments. There were times when you were sublime. I raise this Cosmopolitan in your honor.

I am sad to see you go, but I am also glad that I can finally throw those orange and black striped thigh-highs away.
